National Safety Council is established on 4th March 1966 and So as the idea of commemorating the Foundation Day of the council in the form of national awareness campaign, the first national safety day was launched in 1972 and has since been organized every year It has expanded its duration now to a week commencing from 4th March To facilitate the industries to celebrate the National Safety Day/Week Campaign, the council brings out Safety awareness materials and utility articles with safety message printed on them.

National Safety Council-Gujarat Chapter (NSC-GC) was established at Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute, Ahmedabad on 4th April 2007. It was Inaugurated by State Labour Minister, Gujarat State to generate, develop and sustain a voluntary movement on Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) at the State level. It is an apex nonprofits making, tripartite body, registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950.

To fulfill its objective NSC-GC carries out various activities. These include organising and conducting specialised training courses, seminars & workshops; facilitating organisations in celebrating various campaigns e.g. Safety Day, Fire Service Week, World Environment Day. A computerised Management Information Service has been setup for collection, retrieval and dissemination of information on HSE aspects.
